Heather Ziad About Last Night

A few months ago, I found out that I won't be doing anything on the last weekend of July. So I booked a flight to Barcelona. Pedro, my Portuguese buddy who has been living there for the past few years, was excited when I told him the news.

I read many essays on Barcelona, but nothing beats the real thing. It's my favorite city in western Europe. I made many friends during my last two visits. I enjoyed staring at its historical landmarks. The sight of the Mediterranean Sea was beyond… Continue

Casey Dupont Hope-FULL

You've read it right, I am not just hopeful but hope-FULL. Meaning, I am full of hope in life. Though recession comes every now and then, I am still optimistic that one of these days, the perfect job will come my way. Who knows? That might be later or perhaps tomorrow.

Since I am still in search of that perfect job, I'm just contented in helping out my friends in their individual resume writing.… Continue

Cassandra Branch Transgenders in School

Hi! My name's Cassandra. I'm a pediatrician who specializes in transgender medicine. I'm also a member of the Denver Mayor's GLBT Commission. Currently I'm reviewing school policies in the Metro Denver area.

And I need YOU.

If you're transgender, how's your life in school? How does your school handle transgender students? Do the school policies work? If it were up to you, what policies would YOU have for transgenders?

Please e-mail any comments to me at… Continue

Amy Steiger How I Learned to Tie My Own Shoes

I remember when I was three, my parents barely had the time to play with me. I, being their only child, needed companion aside from books and toys. They were busy because my dad was writing his dissertation.

My parents were economists. Before they took their doctorate degrees, they had me. Because their time is divided, I grew up with books and toys.

They were always in front of the… Continue

Linda Lidov The Power of Language

From the day we are born, we are given labels. The words “boy and girl’ identify us as biologically male or female. And we’re assigned gender roles: boys are expected to be more aggressive, girls are supposed to be polite. Labeling can be harmful – we’ve seen it throughout history. During the Holocaust, Jews were identified by the Nazis as being different and were shipped off to concentration camps. They died because of who they were.

In a recent radio story, the Gay & Lesbian… Continue

Linda Lidov Talking to high-schoolers about being gay

I am a writer for the Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado. Last spring, a program officer at the fund was invited to speak to high-schoolers about what it was like growing up gay. The conversation was powerful. It opened the eyes of many of these students. He put a human face on "gay," and helped these kids realize he was no different from them when it comes to being human. As a Colorado resident and a mother of two young boys (elementary school), I can only hope that conversations like this… Continue

Tracy Phariss Using Web 2.0 to create change.

Hi everyone, I am creating this new web site based on widgets and gadgets and web 2.0 technology. Because of the ability to chat with one another and dangers this poses, this web site will not allow those younger then 13 to become members. This is for safety reason. I have thought about creating a separate limited access website for elementary school students and educators at the elementary school level. You can check out the resource page at www.coloradosafeschools.org which any age person my… Continue
